Farewell to Light

road country

Farewell to Light

Sitting behind the wheel, windows down old

fields on both sides of the road, no headlights

straight lines, four miles, both ways.

Authentic hubcaps, refurbished mirrors

junkyard parts, three layers of paint

Truck runs well, it’s paid for since 1964.

Sun and sky contrast heat, diffused color

Energy spent, geese flying home.

Peanut butter on crackers, go down stale

Thermos of black coffee, cold stout.

No accounting this grandeur, a wapiti

bull elk broke cover, forages in silence.

Solomon had days like this,

good, simple right down to the marrow.
