Slow Down

 

Geese slide into water landing.

Sheep graze, horses meander.

Easy rhythm, hack-hack, hedgelaying.*

Crows fly-hop from tree to tree.

Nothing rapid, slow down.

 

Scones grow fat on the griddle.

Tea kettle, swing over embers.

Cups await afternoon break.

Letters arrive and read and read.

Notes

*Hedgelaying, or hedge laying is a way of making enclosures or boundaries (hedge rows) in agricultural fields. It is a country skill and a process of manual labor. The sound suggest hand-tools used by competent hedgelayers chopping and pleaching with billhook and axe.
